2. Cassie: Mommy? I can't go to sleep, because I need to tell you bad news. Two bad newses!"

Nicole: "What?"

Cassie: "Well, the first bad news is that I can't go to sleep. That's the first bad news. And the second is that a teacher who's not in my class said no one was getting any presents this year."

Afraid of the dark

A good lesson in never assuming you know what's going on in your kid's head:

Cassie: But I'm too afraid of the dark!

Nicole: I used to be afraid of the dark too, when I was little. [Editor's note: I am still actually afraid of the dark.]

Cassie: What were you afraid of?

Nicole: [Choosing not to tell her that I was afraid that someone would come and chop up my family into little bits, or that a kid ghost would arrive at my bedside nicely but creepily]: Hmm. I'm not sure. What are you afraid of in the dark?

Cassie: Meteors.

Nicole: Meteors? Why?

Cassie: Whenever I hear a WHOOSHing sound, I think a meteor is going to hit us.

Bad news is, meteors, unlike ghosts, are actually real. I told her we lived on the 7th floor of a 17 story building, and that the meteor wouldn't make it down as far as we were. And I didn't tell her about the guy in the closet.
